The Dutch are coffee obsessed and in paying homage to that, there’s no shortage of quirky cafes serving up the perfect drip. The area of Amsterdam West combines the districts of Oud-West, De Baarsjes, Westerpark and Bos en Lommer and boasts a vibrant culture set amidst the rapidly gentrifying streets. Notoriously once known as a highly treacherous part of the city, Amsterdam West is now populated with a diverse mix of nationalities, architecture, restaurants and bars paired with a busy urban lifestyle.

Lot Sixty One Coffee Roasters

Perched on one of the sunniest corners of Amsterdam West, Lot Sixty One is and always will be by number one. Set up and run by two Australians, this coffee shop serves up some good, strong coffee guaranteed to kick-start your morning. On a sunny day, grab yourself a seat on the benches outside, sip your delicious cup of coffee and perhaps enjoy one of their delicious treats (Lamington, anyone?). Lot Sixty One roasts their own beans in-house and serve up their perfect brew at other locations and pop ups around the city.

White Label Coffee

White Label is a great little spot on the Jan Evertsenstraat with an excellent variety of exotic and strong coffee guaranteed to perk you up. It’s well designed layout, facilities and reliable Wi-Fi makes it a favorite hotspot for freelancers to work from. Big on their list is the issue of sustainability and fair trade in the coffee bean industry and in saying that, you will find a carefully created menu with beans from Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Costa Rica. Don’t forget to enjoy your coffee with a slice of their delicious and freshly made apple pie.

Located within one of the biggest parks in the city, Espressofabriek is a great spot to pop into if you’re exploring the Westerpark or the shops within the Westergasfabriek. Ever since this place won Best Independent Coffee Bar a couple of years back, it gets seriously busy on the weekends. It’s highly worth the wait though because the coffee and apple pie are pretty amazing.

Monks Coffee Roasters

This new coffee hot-spot recently opened up on the Bilderdijkstraat and it’s excellent approach to coffee and service is drawing in quite a crowd. Owner: Patrick Abbott learned all about the world of coffee and roasting methods after living in Australia for a few years and has now brought his expertise to Amsterdam. They’re well located and open from 07.00 in the morning which only means good things for us early birds. Monks is also a fantastic place for brunch with goodies like smashed avocado with feta chili and lime or toasted banana bread with mascarpone and caramelized fruit on the menu!
